Getting a visa for Umrah from the United States is now done entirely online. There's no paper application, no consulate visit and no mailing your passport. Most US citizens use the Saudi tourist eVisa, while other pilgrims use an Umrah visa arranged with a Nusuk-linked package. Whatever visa you hold, you also need a Nusuk Umrah permit to perform Umrah. Below are the requirements, a document checklist and the key dates for the 1448 AH season. The last entry date is March 23, 2027 and all pilgrims must leave by April 7, 2027.

Which Visa Can I Use for Umrah?

  • Saudi tourist eVisa (visa.visitsaudi.com): for US citizens, US green-card holders, some holders of a used US/UK/Schengen visa, and their first-degree relatives. It is generally valid for 1 year with multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days, at about SAR 480–535 including mandatory insurance (fees change). Umrah is allowed outside the Hajj season with a Nusuk permit.
  • Visa on arrival: available to eligible travelers at major Saudi airports, with the same conditions as the eVisa.
  • Umrah visa (through Nusuk / licensed providers): open to any nationality, including non-US nationals living in the US. You must enter within 30 days of issue and can stay up to 90 days. It is linked to hotel and transport booked through Nusuk.
  • Multiple-entry Umrah visa (new, July 2026): valid for 1 year, with up to 90 days in total across visits. It needs a Nusuk package and a permit for each visit, and can't be used in Hajj season.
  • Transit/stopover visa: up to 96 hours with some airlines. Umrah is possible outside Hajj season.

None of these visas can be used for Hajj.

Umrah Visa Document Checklist

  • Passport: your original passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and have at least 2 blank pages. A clear scan is uploaded online. You don't need to mail it.
  • Online visa application: complete it on visa.visitsaudi.com (eVisa) or through your Umrah package provider (Umrah visa). There is no paper form to sign or download.
  • Digital photo: a recent color photo with a plain white background, if requested. You don't need printed photos.
  • US green card (non-US citizens): a valid green card is required for eVisa eligibility. Carry the original when you travel.
  • Children: a copy of the birth certificate. Under-18s must travel with a parent or legal guardian, and their application is linked to that adult's. If a child is traveling with only one parent, carry a notarized consent letter from the other parent.
  • Couples: a copy of your marriage certificate. It isn't required for the eVisa, but it's useful for family bookings and room sharing.
  • Meningitis vaccination certificate: meningococcal ACWY (formerly written "ACYW135"). A conjugate vaccine within 5 years or a polysaccharide vaccine within 3 years, given at least 10 days before arrival.
  • Women: no mahram letter is needed. Women 18 and over may perform Umrah without a mahram. The old "must be 45 with a notarized Mehram letter" rule no longer applies.
  • Converts to Islam: if your name doesn't indicate that you're Muslim, we recommend carrying a certificate of Islam from your Islamic center in case you're asked. It isn't a standard eVisa requirement.
  • Hotel and return flight: confirmed bookings. For an Umrah visa, accommodation must be booked through the Nusuk system, which our packages handle.
  • Nusuk Umrah permit: book your Umrah date and time in the Nusuk app after you get your visa. It's required for every pilgrim.
  • No FedEx needed: everything is submitted online. Share scans with us securely and we'll check them before you apply.

How to Apply for an Umrah Visa from the USA

Step 1

Check your eligibility

US citizens and most green-card holders can use the tourist eVisa. Other nationalities living in the US usually need an Umrah visa through a provider. Ask us if you're unsure.

Step 2

Gather your documents

Passport, digital photo, green card (if applicable), meningitis certificate, and family documents for children.

Step 3

Apply online

eVisa: apply at visa.visitsaudi.com and pay the fee, which includes insurance. Umrah visa: book a Nusuk-linked package with us and we'll handle the application.

Step 4

Receive your visa by email

Print a copy and save it on your phone. For an Umrah visa, you must enter Saudi Arabia within 30 days of issue.

Step 5

Book your Nusuk Umrah permit

In the Nusuk app, choose your Umrah date and time slot. Book the Rawdah in Madinah too, if you want to visit.

Step 6

Travel before the deadlines

For the 1448 season, the last entry is March 23, 2027 and the last departure is April 7, 2027.

More About Umrah Visa Requirements for Americans

Saudi Umrah visa criteria: you must be a Muslim intending to perform Umrah, hold a valid passport and meet the health rules. You must also travel outside the Hajj-season closure (about 1 Dhul-Qa'dah to mid-Dhul-Hijjah).

US citizens: the simplest route is usually the tourist eVisa, which you can apply for yourself. Alternatively, book a package with a US agency like ours that includes visa support.

US green-card holders and residents: green-card holders can usually apply for the eVisa online. Nationals of some countries have faced extra restrictions since 2025 (for example, single-entry visas only), so check your eligibility first. Non-US nationals without a green card can use an Umrah visa through a Nusuk package.

Nusuk app requirements: the Nusuk app (nusuk.sa) is where you get your Umrah permit and Rawdah booking. Create an account with your passport and visa details and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Processing time: tourist eVisas are often issued quickly, sometimes the same day, but allow at least 1–2 weeks. Don't apply for an Umrah visa too early, because it is cancelled if you don't enter within 30 days of issue.

Photo and passport specifications: use a recent color photo with a plain white background and a neutral expression, without glasses. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are fine if your face is fully visible. Your passport scan must be clear and show the full data page.

Do you need a hotel booking? For an Umrah visa, yes, and it must be booked through the Nusuk system. For the tourist eVisa, a hotel booking isn't required to get the visa, but you should have confirmed accommodation.

Cost and insurance: the tourist eVisa costs about SAR 480–535 (about US$128–143) including mandatory medical insurance. Umrah visas also carry mandatory insurance. The Saudi insurance covers emergency treatment only, so we recommend separate travel insurance for cancellation and medical evacuation.

Official Saudi Umrah rules: respect local laws and customs (including on social media), follow health protocols, carry your Nusuk permit, and leave before the season's final departure date. Before you travel, also read the US State Department's current travel advisory for Saudi Arabia.

Umrah Visa FAQs

Can you perform Umrah on a tourist visa from the USA?
Yes. US citizens and eligible US residents can perform Umrah on the Saudi tourist eVisa or a visa on arrival, outside the Hajj season, as long as they book a Nusuk Umrah permit. A tourist visa cannot be used for Hajj.
How long is a multiple-entry visa valid?
The tourist eVisa is generally valid for 1 year with multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days. The new multiple-entry Umrah visa (July 2026) is also valid for 1 year, with up to 90 days in total across all visits. A single Umrah visa must be used within 30 days of issue, and you can stay up to 90 days. (The older "valid for 90 days from issue" and "valid for 15 days" information is out of date.)
What vaccinations are required for a Saudi Umrah visa?
The meningococcal ACWY vaccine is mandatory for all Umrah pilgrims, given at least 10 days before arrival (valid 5 years for conjugate, 3 years for polysaccharide). As of the 1447H rules, COVID-19 vaccination is required only for higher-risk groups, such as people aged 65+, pregnant women and people with chronic illness. Seasonal flu is recommended.
Is travel insurance required for Umrah pilgrims?
Basic medical insurance is mandatory and is included in the eVisa and Umrah visa fees. It covers emergency treatment only. We strongly recommend additional travel insurance for trip cancellation, lost baggage and medical evacuation.
Are there age limits for an Umrah visa?
There's no minimum or maximum age for Umrah. Children under 18 must travel with a parent or legal guardian. Nusuk permits are reportedly issued from age 5, and younger children are added to a parent's profile.
Do women need a mahram to get an Umrah visa?
No. Saudi Arabia abolished the mahram requirement for women aged 18 and over. Women under 18 must travel with a parent or guardian. Many women choose to travel with family or a group, and that's entirely their choice.
When is the last date to travel for Umrah before Hajj 2027?
The last day for Umrah visas to be issued is March 9, 2027, the last day to enter Saudi Arabia is March 23, 2027, and all Umrah pilgrims must leave by April 7, 2027 (Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, 1448 calendar).
